CMMA Board Bio - Kurt Helgeson
Where do you work, what do you do?
I just finished my 23rd year of teaching at St. Cloud State University. I am the Department Chair of Environmental & Technological Studies. I teach construction and graduate courses for Technology Education teachers.
What was your first job?
Rock picking on the farm. First paying job off the farm was coaching baseball summer program. I coached for nine years through college.
Hometown?
Wood Lake – small town in southwestern Minnesota.
Family?
My wife Stacy and I have been married for 33 years. She teaches elementary in Kimball. Our son Neil just took over as the general manager of the Kimball Golf Course and daughter Danielle is an American Sign Language Interpreter. She lives in Chicago and loves the big city.
Hobbies, play any sports or favorite games?
I love to golf and travel. I have visited 48 states – Alaska and Hawaii to go.
Comment on your involvement with CMMA:
I do a lot of work with the grants for k-12 schools as part of my work for CMMA. I really appreciate that CMMA is a rare organization that really works to understand education and to support teachers and students.
What would CMMA members be surprised to learn about you?
I have been a member of the South Haven Fire & Rescue Department for 21 years.
