St. Cloud Overhead Door, dba American Door Works

1. Please describe the product/service your company provides?  American Door Works sells, installs, and services all types of commercial and residential overhead doors, specialty doors (rolling steel, high speed, traffic doors, etc.), openers, and loading dock equipment. We have a skilled, well-trained team of professional installers and service technicians that handle all aspects of installing, repairing, and performing Planned Maintenance services for our commercial customers throughout Minnesota.
2. How does your company impact a specific industry?  Our customer base is so diverse that it is hard to say that we impact a specific industry, but our largest customer segment is General Contractors that select us for their residential and commercial building projects. We positively impact those end-users by helping them pick the right door for their application, then professionally installing and maintaining those doors to ensure as little disruption to their business and life as possible.
3. Are you a corporation? Both American Door Works and Mid Central Door are incorporated privately-owned businesses.

Company history

1. When was the company started and who founded it?  Company was founded in 1972 as St. Cloud Overhead Door by Lenny and Roger Bechtold.
2. When has there been major changes to the produce line or expansions?  In 1974, Mid Central Door was started to service our customers looking for commercial walk-thru door solutions, including hollow metal doors and frames, wood doors, and architectural hardware. Mid Central Door shared space with American Door Works until 1997, when it moved into its separate facility in Waite Park, MN. Through acquisition or organic growth, American Door Works expanded into Willmar (1992), Brainerd (2003) and Alexandria (2012). Each location has its own showroom, warehouse, and sales/technical team.
3. What is significant/interesting about the history?  In 2015, our overhead door businesses (St. Cloud Overhead Door, Willmar Overhead Door, Brainerd Overhead Door and Lakes Area Overhead Door) were brought under the one name of American Door Works. There are a variety of reasons for this change, but the main one was to be able to market under one name/brand as we expanded geographically and with additional door-related product and service offerings.
4. Who are the current owners? Gary Bechtold, who purchased the company from his father, Roger, in 2009.

Customers

1. Who are your customers?  We have a broad customer base of homeowners, property managers, residential and commercial contractors, government entities, and any business or organization with doors. Our business is evenly distributed between new residential doors, new commercial doors, and overall service/repair of doors.
2. Where are they located? While we do occasionally do projects in the Upper Midwest (five state area), we mostly stay within two hours of each of our locations allowing us to service most of Minnesota. Mid Central Door follows our contractor customers around the country as they mostly provide materials that can be shipped to jobsites.
3. Who do you want for customers?  Any individual, contractor or business in Minnesota that needs new doors or has existing doors that need to be serviced. Other questions

1. How has CMMA benefited your company?  Like many members, we are looking to grow and hire experienced professionals or good people who are trainable. The efforts of this organization to partner with schools and develop the future workforce is a key benefit.
