SCSU’s Make-It-Space adds Stratasys’ newest 3D printer offering students cutting edge experiences

In addition to being able to produce full color multi-material,  smooth and highly accurate 3D prints,  the Make-It-Space’s newest 3D printer addition ( the J55 by Stratasys)  will allow students to produce 3D printed molds to be used in the injection molding process. This process is one of the main methods of producing plastic parts and products world-wide.  The ability to create 3D printed molds is a new development being used in the plastics manufacturing industry.  Traditionally molds are machined from aluminum or steel which is comparatively a longer turn around and more costly process.  3D printing is changing the fields of engineering, design and manufacturing and students graduating from SCSU with knowledge of how to integrate and apply 3D printing technologies will be highly sought after when entering the workforce.  The interest in working to provide this kind of 3D printing experience to SCSU students originated from suggestions and input from industry members who serve on the advisory board for the Manufacturing Engineering Technology program and SCSU faculty worked with our industry partners H2I and Stratasys to make it happen.
The SCSU Make-It-Space is located in Headley Hall with open hours each week during the fall and spring semesters and is dedicated to helping all SCSU Students and faculty create mock-ups, prototypes and production models for their course related and personal projects.
